About Miniature Herefords

History

Almost 250 years ago, the Tomkins family of Herefordshire, England set out to develop a breed of cattle that could turn the grass of the local hills into beef, and thus into gold. After years of selective breeding, the Tomkins closed the herd in 1756, and the line of the present-day Herefords was begun. The first Hereford herd in American was started in 1840 in New York state, but it was not until Anxiety 4th was imported from England in 1882 that the Hereford dominance in America was launched. The present-day Miniature Herefords are descendents of this noble ancestor.

From the turn of the century to the mid 1960's, generations of Hereford breeders, by reducing size and improving type, developed an extremely efficient beef animal. At one time, 70% of all the registered cattle in America were Herefords. The Miniature Herefords of today are the result of a concentrated effort of more than 20 years to return to and keep an efficient type of Hereford.
